Internships and Residencies

These are the only departments offering internships and residencies at this time.

  • Administrative Fellowship

    This one-year fellowship program is tailored to the administrative fellows’ specific interests as well as organization initiatives during their tenure at the hospital. Learn more.

  • Advanced Practice Provider (APP) Fellowship Program

    This one-year post-graduate fellowship program supports and mentors nurse practitioners and physician assistants as they develop their ability to provide high-quality care to diverse pediatric patients with complex conditions. Learn more.

  • Child Life

    We are not offering an internship for Fall 2024. Our next offering will be for Winter/Spring 2025.

    Child life interns will complete 640 hours over a 16-week period from January to May. Primary placement will be at our hospital campus with some time spent at other Seattle Children’s locations.

    Requirements

    • Current undergraduate or graduate student in child life or related field of study
    • Enrolled in an academic institution that has a current affiliation agreement with Seattle Children’s
    • Verification of the academic coursework required by the Association for Child Life Professionals (ACLP) eligibility assessment

    How to apply

    • Seattle Children’s only accepts interns from affiliated academic institutions. Prior to applying, please check our list below to verify that your institution has a current affiliation agreement. If your institution does not have a current agreement, please contact the fieldwork/academic advisor at your university and have them email childlifeinternship@seattlechildrens.org to set up an affiliation agreement.
    • We follow the national ACLP guideline for application deadlines and offer and acceptance dates. Please refer to the ACLP website for more details.
    • At this time, we only accept electronic applications from applicants from affiliated academic institutions. Please verify from the list below that your academic institution has a current contract.

    • Medical Assistant Apprenticeship

      This program combines on-the-job training with online coursework to prepare participants to take the national certification exam.  Under this program, individuals work as MA apprentices for approximately one year, during which they complete 2,000 hours of on-the-job training while also progressing in online coursework. 

      As they complete required on-the-job hours, apprentices observe, practice and achieve mastery of core MA skills under the direction of a supervisor or apprenticeship coach.  Throughout the year, apprentices also complete online coursework and skills labs outside of work to supplement and support on-the-job learning.  Participants are registered with the state as MA apprentices and satisfy all requirements as outlined in state program standards. 

      The program includes: 

      • 2,000 hours of on-the-job training (paid, full-time work) 
      • 434 hours of online coursework, estimated at 10 hours per week (outside of work hours/unpaid) 
      • Three in-person lab days for skills practice related to online coursework 
      • Preparation for the national certification exam 
      • All training materials/supplies and national certification exam registration 

      Once they complete the program, graduated apprentices apply for state licensure and open medical assistant-certified (MA-C) positions.  Passage of the Seattle Children’s medication administration math test is required to begin work as an MA-C.  Seattle Children's will cover the costs of the apprenticeship program with the expectation that apprentices will move into MA-C positions and work at Seattle Children's for at least one year following completion of the program. 

      2024 cohorts start in February and August.  Openings are typically posted approximately 12 weeks prior to each cohort start.  To apply, look for the posting in the career center.  If you have questions, or would like to be added to a distribution list to be notified of future application dates, please contact MAapprenticeship@seattlechildrens.org.

    • Non-Clinical Summer Internships

      Our program provides opportunities for students to engage in hands-on projects; grow and strengthen professional development skills; and build connections with fellow interns and mentors in an inclusive environment.

      Rising seniors and recent grads, with an interest in healthcare, from underrepresented backgrounds and local colleges/technical schools

      Location

      Hybrid and fully remote internships are available in a range of non-clinical departments, including marketing/communications, clinical analytics, business operations and health and public policy.

    • Nurse Technician (Paid Position)

      These positions are for RN students currently enrolled in an accredited school of nursing and in good standing. Registration with the Washington State Department of Health is required.

      In addition to Washington state requirements, Seattle Children’s prefers students to have completed their junior year of a BSN program and to have completed a pediatric clinical rotation before applying for a nurse tech position.

      Nursing students

      Clinical experiences for nursing students are only available via contracted affiliated schools of nursing.

      New nursing graduates

      Seattle Children’s nurse residency is a one-year program that prepares and supports new graduates with less than one year of experience starting their pediatric career. Learn more.

    • Occupational Therapy

      Please note that there is a three-year waiting list for occupational therapy internships at Seattle Children's. There are only a few slots designated to each school.

      Requirements

      • You must be in an occupational therapy program at a university with which we have a contract.
      • Requests must go through the Occupational Therapy department at Seattle Children's and through the fieldwork coordinator at your university.
      • If we do not have a contract with your school, you must talk to your fieldwork/internship coordinator to arrange an internship with Seattle Children's.

    • Postgraduate Year One (PGY1) Pharmacy Residency

      The Postgraduate Year One Pharmacy Residency at Seattle Children’s is a one-year training program that offers an environment to gain professional competence, expand clinical knowledge, and develop a philosophy of pharmacy practice.

      Applications are accepted in early January for the residency program that runs from July to June. Selected applicants will be required to visit Seattle Children’s for an on-site or virtual interview in January or February.

      Requirements

      • PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy, or equivalent experience
      • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Washington. Must obtain pharmacist license by September during the residency program.
      • Participate in the ASHP Pharmacy Resident Matching Program.

    • Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Oncology Pharmacy Residency

      The Postgraduate Year Two (PGY2) Oncology Pharmacy Residency at Seattle Children’s is a one-year training program that provides training in the field of oncology with a focus on pediatrics. Experience is gained in general hematology-oncology, stem cell transplantation and ambulatory care. Opportunities to explore additional areas of interest are available through electives both on- and off-site.

      Requirements

      Selected applicants will be required to visit Seattle Children’s for an on-site or virtual interview in January or February. The applicant must meet the following general requirements:

      • PharmD degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy or BS degree from an ACPE-accredited college or school of pharmacy and 2 years of hospital patient-care experience
      • Successful completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1 residency
      • Licensed or eligible for licensure in the state of Washington. Must obtain pharmacist license by September of the year the program begins.
      • Participate in the ASHP Pharmacy Resident Matching Program. Our program code number is 95017.

    • Physical Therapy

      Please note that there are only a few slots available per calendar year, and an interview process with each prospective intern is required to help determine if this pediatric setting is the most appropriate for the student.

      Requirements

      • You must be in a physical therapy program at a university with which we have a contract.
      • Requests must be relayed to the clinical coordinator of clinic education (CCCE) in the Physical Therapy department at Children’s through the fieldwork coordinator at your university.
      • If we do not have a contract with your school, you must talk to your fieldwork/internship coordinator to have them initiate contact with the CCCE at Children’s to determine if setting up a contract is possible.

    • Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit

      The Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine Unit (PBMU) is a 41-bed facility providing acute care and crisis stabilization for patients ages 3 to 17 who are struggling with a wide variety of psychiatric diagnoses.

      The PBMU offers a 10-week internship program for college juniors and seniors to learn about the day-to-day operations of a pediatric acute care inpatient psychiatric facility from a floor-level perspective. Interns will spend an eight-hour shift each week paired with bachelor's-level staff (coaches) working directly with patients, specifically learning how to support patients through skill development and coaching. Interns will receive a thorough orientation covering safety; effective behavior; milieu and crisis management; professionalism; boundaries; documentation; patient- and family-centered care; and accountability, respect and teamwork (ART) standards.

      Interns will not have direct contact with psychiatrists or psychologists and will not be able to observe or participate in treatment interventions as conducted by psychiatrists or psychologists. If this is what you are looking for in an experience, you should explore opportunities at other organizations.

      Qualifications

      You must be a junior or senior currently enrolled in a program at the University of Washington, Seattle Pacific University or Seattle University. We are not able to accept applications from students at other colleges and universities at this time, due to contractual agreements. To participate in this internship you must be enrolled in a class that you can receive credit for through this internship or you must be enrolled in a practicum course that you can receive credit for through this internship. We only accept six interns per quarter.

    • Research Internships and Training Opportunities

      Are you a high school, undergraduate or graduate student interested in pursuing training opportunities and internships at Seattle Children’s Research Institute? Our opportunities include:

    • Social Work

      The Department of Social Work accepts five to eight master’s-level social work interns each year. Placements are in a variety of specialty ambulatory clinics and inpatient roles. We do not serve patients receiving care in the inpatient or outpatient psychiatry units; MSW students interested in Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Medicine placements should contact that department separately.

      Our standard internship program runs from late September through May, in alignment with University of Washington academic quarters. Students should expect a schedule of Monday-Wednesday (24 hours/week) on-site. On a case-by-case basis we will consider students starting in summer quarter or with alternate internship days.

      Requirements

      • Internships are available to master’s-level social worker students enrolled in a CSWE-accredited program.
      • Students must be in their specialized (second) year or advanced standing; we do not accept students for foundational internships.
